Every June is a busy month of attending conferences and exhibiting at trade shows for the IDS Sales & Marketing team. From DSA to IRCE to NCLC, we were well represented. This past month, I attended the National Confectioners Logistics Council (NCLC) meeting in Seattle, WA at the EdgeWater Hotel. It was a beautiful location for the annual meeting.
The NCLC is a wonderful event each year that brings together shippers (confectionery manufacturers) and providers (transportation and warehouse 3PLs/brokers, etc.). At the event, we are able to come together and discuss new strategies, transportation issues, new policies and what the future holds for this industry. The meeting gave everyone the opportunity to meet with customers and other providers to discuss our networks, regulations and prepare for the upcoming holiday season. This year was also particularly special as we said goodbye to 2 people – Jerry Gimmel and Abby Spencer – who have both been running this organization for 20+ years.
We discussed new regulations and policies that will affect the confectionary industry, shippers and providers in the next year and going forward. We also spent time during a break out session talking about safe quality food, reverse logistics and best practices for avoiding fines, multiple seals for LTL loads and on time delivery metrics. One of my favorite topics of the conference was regarding the future of the industry looking at driverless trucks, drones and the increase in intermodal/rail volumes.
Last year, IDS was a new provider at the event introducing our team to the customers we serve in Utah. In 2016, I was able to spend more time touching base with customers on service and plans for the upcoming year. We look forward to being more involved with the NCLC going forward!
