Mike Jones, President of Fulfillment at IDS, and I made our way to the DSA's (Direct Selling Association) Annual Meeting, held June 5-7 this year, to exhibit at the Marriott Desert Ridge Resort and Spa. The vision of this year's theme, "REIMAGINE", set out to challenge attendees to prepare for the future of direct selling, teaching them how to protect the interests of the consumer and their independent micro-entrepreneurs as digital technology and the sharing economy dramatically change this industry. It was my first time attending, though IDS has been exhibiting for over 10 years. We were excited to be surrounded by some of direct selling's largest companies and suppliers to discover the latest trends, learn of new company successes and provide education to the direct sales industry on order fulfillment strategies.
The Direct Selling Association is the national trade association for companies that offer entrepreneurial opportunities to independent sellers to market and sell products and services, typically outside of a fixed retail establishment. More than 18 million Americans are involved in direct selling in the United States alone. Direct Selling News announced that 2015 retail sales of the top 100 global direct selling companies generated more than $82 billion in sales.
The DSA offers members a wide range of business tools, industry contacts, educational opportunities (such as their Annual Meeting), networking events and support services that are designed to meet the needs of a direct selling company at all levels.
IDS has been an active supplier member of the DSA for over a decade, and in recent years, have been nominated for the ETHOS Partnerships Award. This year we were excited about the vast opportunities to meet other industry experts, learn more about the industry’s most pertinent topics, and educate attendees on all that we have to offer as an order fulfillment company rooted in the direct selling industry. We were able to discuss all of our new and improved capabilities since moving into our recently completed 450,738 square foot fulfillment center as well.
Some of the discussion highlights from this year's event were:
- What Big Data Can Do For You: Exploring trends in data analysis to drive competitive advantage, moderated by John Parker, VP and Chief Sales Officer of Amway
- Understanding Independent Work in the United States: What are Americans' motivations for undertaking work as independent contractors, moderated by Lori Bush, DSA Meeting Chair and Retired President/CEO of Rodan + Fields
- Best Practices to Prevent Shipping Costs from Eroding Your Margins: Best practices to mitigate the carriers' seemingly never-ending price hikes, moderated by Luke Kupersmith, CEO & Co-Founder of Lojistic
- Beating Unathorized Sellers at their Own Game: Valuable tools and techniques to sharply reduce unathorized sales, moderated by Joseph Aquilina, Attorney of the Direct Selling Association
We appreciate the deepend relationships we've been able to establish at this annual event, and continue to look forward to next year's Annual Meeting to educate those in the industry on how to select the right outsourced order fulfillment.
